Boston Strong: Ways to Help
"Our sport has lost its innocence.
But it hasn't lost its spirit." -Karla Bruning
Karla hit the nail on the head. The spirit of running cannot be broken. The images of runners going towards the blasts (along with the amazing EMTs, Boston PD and BAA volunteers) helping every participant's injured prized possessions, family members and spectators, says it all. As stated by Scott Dickey, CEO of Competitor Group (largest private marathon organizer), "They picked the wrong group. We're tough and gritty."
It gives me goosebumps to see how fast the nation, the running community, has come together to help those affected in Boston. Here are just a few ways you can help or pay tribute to those touched by this terrible tragedy:
WAYS TO HELP:
THE ONE FUND: Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick and Boston Mayor Tom Menino announced the formation of the The One Fund, Inc. to help the people most affected by the tragic events that occurred in Boston on April 15, 2013.
*Note: The One Fund Tops $6M in 24 hours. Amazing.
BOSTON CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL: Support the hospital's efforts with a donation to the Marathon Program.
ADIDAS BOSTON TRIBUTE TEE: Adidas has created a Boston Tribute Tee with the screen print "Boston, Stands as One" retailing for $26.20 (paying tribute to the marathon distance of 26.2). Adidas is donating 100% of all proceeds to The One Fund.
GONE FOR A RUN: My friend, Amy Pine, alerted our little virtual running group of this womens everyday runners tee: Boston We Are Strong--$19.99. All net proceeds will be donated to The One Fund.
LIMITED EDITION BOSTON HAT: Headsweats is offering a limited edition hat to raise money for the families affected on April 15. Fifty percent of all sales of the Boston Limited Edition Collection will be put into a Boston Fund that will be dispersed to a charity that is offering assistance to the victims of the explosions on Monday.
BOSTON STRONG NECKLACE: From now until April 30th, 100% of proceeds from sales of the Every Mile and the Boston Strong necklaces will be donated to The One Fund Boston.
RUE LA LA: Boston-based company Rue La La is selling t-shirts for $20 with 100% of the proceeds going to relief efforts.
ASPAERIS PIVOT SHORT: Aspaeris Pivot Shorts announced on Twitter it will be donating 10% of their profits in April to the American Red Cross of Eastern Massachusetts.
IF YOU'RE UNABLE TO DONATE, THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO...THE BEST THING ALL OF US CAN DO...IS RUN.
CONTINUE TO RUN.
NEVER. STOP. RUNNING.
A LIST OF NATIONWIDE VIRTUAL RACES:
PAVEMENT RUNNER: A list from Rock 'N' Roll blogger Pavement Runner of tribute runs across the country.
ST. LOUIS UNITY RUN FOR BOSTON: Runners of St. Louis will be meeting on Saturday, April 20, at 10 a.m. in Forest Park Visitor and Education Center.
CHICAGO RUNS FOR BOSTON: Chicago Runs for Boston benefitting the American Red Cross takes place on April 22.
The national anthem at last night's Boston Bruins game.
