Running Rant: 3rd Edition

WAY TO GO, CASE-FACE!

First, a major shout out to Casey for running 10 miles on Tuesday!

This is the longest distance he has completed since the 2008 Chicago Marathon. He is pretty much set for the 2013 Eugene Half Marathon which is only a little over a month away. EEP!

BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS

The past two days I have indulged in what I am dubbing as the "Ultimate Oatmeal" complete with: oatmeal, brown sugar, granola, walnuts, organic blueberries, organic dried cranberries and chia seeds.

You're welcome.

COCONUT OIL UPDATE

A few weeks ago, I mentioned I bought some coconut oil to see what the rage is all about it. Every fitness blog and magazine has been plugging the effects of this miracle goop and I wanted to see if the hype was true.

Well.... it is.

I haven't ingested it yet (I don't cook in our hotel room), but I have used coconut oil externally and have noticed a huge difference in my hair and my skin. A couple nights a week, I've been sleeping with coconut oil lathered on my mane and my face (luckily, Casey doesn't mind the smell). The next day after sleeping in a coconut oil mask, my hair feels softer, stronger and looks less frizzy/dry than usual. Putting a dab (about the size of a dime) of coconut oil on your face as a substitute for lotion also gives you an instant glow and helps to moisturize more effectively.

I'm sold.

IT'S NEVER TOO LATE TO START RUNNING

A lot of times I hear, "I'm too old to run."

Well, guess what?

No, you're not.

Meet Fauja Singh, a 101-year-old man believed to be the oldest marathon runner. Read his inspiring story produced by Outside the Lines here or watch the video below:

(If this doesn't give you an extra boost of motivation today than I'm not sure what will)

THE BEST YEARS ARE YET TO COME

Recently, my friend Amy ran the 2013 Asics LA Marathon and wrote a ridiculously awesome recap (you should probably read it).

Elite marathoner/Olympian, Deena Kastor, headlined the race (Amy and Deena posing together at the expo--color me jealous).

When I noticed Deena didn't take home the victory, I went over to the LA Marathon website to check the results and see who finished ahead of her in the 1 and 2 spots.

Do you notice what I noticed?

(click to enlarge because right now you probably can't see anything)

The top 10 women are all above the age of 27.
3 of the top 10 females are 40+
4 of the 10 are 30+

I don't know about you, but this gives me hope that with consistent training my best years are yet to come.

DOCS YOU SHOULD WATCH

Thanks to Hungry Runner Girl, I watched "Hungry for Change" on Tuesday night and now I find myself questioning everything I consume. Oy, and here I thought I was a "healthy eater."

Food for thought: Just check out this list of products containing MSG via www.msgtruth.org

This documentary also gave me the sudden urge to start juicing (no, not this kind of juicing but this kind). Anyone want to join me?

Tip: Currently available to watch on Netflix

CITIZEN RUNNER

Here's another great article that will be sure to give you a swift kick in the ass rear the next time you feel like you don't have enough time to train for a marathon.

The "Citizen Runer" Yuki Kawauchi has a full-time gig and is an elite runner. Chyeah.

VAMOS UNA CERVEZA

I feel ignorant because I only know one language.
Most individuals outside of the United States can speak at least two.
I like to go for long runs on the beach
Here's a great idea...
how about I learn a new language while running around aimlessly.
OBVIOUS GENIUS.

Wish me luck as I try to achieve one of my life-goals of becoming bilingual in 2013.
Who's with me?!

Tip: I downloaded the Pimsleur Method (units 6-10) on iTunes as a start, but they also have Rosetta Stone and some other free applications to get you started.

STEALS

Apparently, my new favorite wine (available at Trader Joe's) is even cheaper in Sacramento.
$3.99?
STEAL.

FOR LAUGHS

Casey and I were ROLLING watching this video on Tuesday...enjoy!

QUESTIONS FOR YOU:

WHAT WOULD YOUR REACTION BE IF YOU WERE ONE OF THE RUNNERS FOOLED BY COUSIN SAL?
I'd ask for a picture in return for being punk'd--we love when Cousin Sal is a guest on the B.S. Report.

ANY DEALS YOU WANT TO SHARE WITH ME? ;)

HAVE YOU TRIED COCONUT OIL? HOW DO YOU USE IT?

WHAT LANGUAGE WOULD YOU LIKE TO LEARN?
